NAF Debunks Claims of Aircraft Detention in Burkina Faso, Confirms Precautionary Landing

The Nigerian military has dispelled widespread reports that a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 aircraft was grounded or detained by authorities in Burkina Faso, clarifying that the plane made a precautionary landing due to a minor technical concern.

The clarification was issued after social media speculation and commentary suggested that the aircraft and its crew were held in Bobo-Dioulasso, raising diplomatic concerns at a time of tense regional relations between Nigeria and members of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES).

In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, the Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the narrative of a detention or arrest was “entirely false and misleading,” stressing that the events were routine and handled professionally by both countries.

Routine Flight to Portugal Turns into Emergency Diversion

According to Ejodame, the NAF C-130 transport aircraft was on a scheduled ferry mission to Portugal for maintenance when the crew detected a technical issue shortly after takeoff from Lagos.

In adherence to international aviation safety protocols, the crew immediately declared a precautionary diversion and selected the nearest safe airfield-Bobo-Dioulasso International Airport in Burkina Faso.

“They acted strictly in line with global aviation standards,” Ejodame said. “The decision to divert was made purely for safety, and the aircrew carried out all required procedures with professionalism.”

Burkinabe Authorities Provided “Cordial Support”

Ejodame emphasized that, contrary to reports of hostility or detention, the Burkinabe authorities were supportive from the moment the aircraft landed.

“The NAF crew was received warmly, and engineers were given full access to inspect and address the technical concern,” he explained. He added that the cooperation from Burkina Faso included access to airport facilities, security support, and collaboration with local aviation officials.

Technical checks were ongoing as of Tuesday morning, with plans already underway for the aircraft to resume its trip to Portugal once cleared.

Media Reports Spark Diplomatic Concerns

Initial reports alleging that the aircraft was “grounded” or “held” caused public alarm, particularly as Burkina Faso-alongside Niger and Mali, recently exited ECOWAS to form the Confederation of Sahel States (AES).

The three countries have had strained relations with Nigeria since withdrawing from the regional bloc in early 2024. This geopolitical backdrop fuelled speculation that the aircraft incident was politically motivated or connected to recent tensions within the Sahel.

Ejodame, however, firmly stated that no political interference occurred and urged the public to discount narratives suggesting otherwise.

“There was no confrontation, no arrest, and no detention,” he said. “This was a simple precautionary landing that received full cooperation from the host nation.”

NAF Reaffirms Commitment to Safety Standards

The statement stressed that safety remains the top priority for the Nigerian Air Force, especially when operating long-range transport aircraft like the C-130.

Ejodame reassured the Nigerian public that the Air Force strictly adheres to global aviation practices, including aborting or diverting flights when anomalies are detected.

He added that the C-130 fleet continues to play a critical role in Nigeria’s military logistics, humanitarian missions, troop transport, and international operations.

Aviation Analysts Back NAF’s Explanation

Aviation experts say that precautionary landings are common in military and commercial aviation and should not be mistaken for emergencies or diplomatic infractions.

Captain Tunde Balogun, a retired military pilot, said:

“Anytime a pilot identifies an abnormal reading, a change in engine behavior, or hydraulic fluctuation, the safest thing to do is divert. This is routine. Political interpretations often come from those unfamiliar with aviation.”

He also noted that Bobo-Dioulasso is a strategically ideal diversion airport due to its long runway and history of accommodating military aircraft from various nations.

Regional Political Climate Heightens Sensitivity

While the NAF insists the event was purely mechanical, analysts acknowledge that the current political climate in West Africa has heightened public sensitivity to any military interaction involving countries in the Sahel.

Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali’s withdrawal from ECOWAS and formation of the AES have generated friction with neighboring states, especially Nigeria.

However, Burkina Faso’s aviation authorities have not issued any statement contradicting the NAF’s version, and available evidence points to a technical-not political-incident.

What Happens Next?

With technical inspections nearing completion, officials say the C-130 is expected to continue its journey to Portugal once engineers certify it safe for flight. The crew is also expected to return to Nigeria or accompany the aircraft upon completion of maintenance abroad.

Ejodame concluded his statement with a reminder:

“The Nigerian Air Force remains fully committed to operational excellence, safety, and the protection of its personnel. The public should disregard misleading claims.”
