Lagos-Bound Passenger Dies on Kenya Airways Flight From Nairobi

A passenger travelling from Nairobi, Kenya, to Lagos, Nigeria, has died aboard a Kenya Airways flight after becoming unresponsive shortly before the aircraft landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night, October 6, 2026, during a Kenya Airways flight bound for Lagos. The airline confirmed on Wednesday that the passenger experienced a medical emergency approximately 20 minutes before the aircraft was due to land.

According to Kenya Airways, the cabin crew responded immediately after discovering that the passenger was unresponsive. First aid was administered and established emergency procedures were activated as the aircraft continued its journey to Lagos.

The aircraft eventually landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at approximately 9:41 p.m. Nigerian time, where medical personnel were waiting to attend to the passenger.

However, despite the emergency response, medical personnel who examined the passenger after the aircraft landed confirmed that the individual had died. The airline has not disclosed the passenger's name, age or nationality.

Passenger became unresponsive before landing

In a statement, Kenya Airways said the medical emergency occurred at about 9:20 p.m., roughly 20 minutes before the scheduled arrival in Lagos.

The airline said its crew administered first aid in accordance with their training and followed the necessary emergency procedures while preparing for the aircraft's arrival.

“Upon landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport at 21:41 hrs, the aircraft was met by medical personnel, and upon further examination, the medical personnel confirmed that the passenger had passed away,” the airline said.

Kenya Airways expressed condolences to the deceased passenger's family and friends and said it was working with the family, local authorities and aviation regulators.

The airline also stressed that it was respecting the privacy and dignity of those involved.

Police take over investigation

The circumstances surrounding the passenger's death have prompted an investigation by Nigerian authorities.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) said it had been briefed by Kenya Airways about the incident, while the police have taken over the investigation.

NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, said the airline's country manager contacted him concerning the incident.

According to Achimugu, the passenger had reportedly been picked up in Madagascar after being denied entry by customs authorities. Kenya Airways was subsequently expected to return the passenger because it had transported him to the country.

The NCAA official further alleged that the passenger became restless and aggressive during the return journey. He reportedly attempted to gain access to the cockpit and later tried to open the aircraft's rear door.

The passenger was subsequently restrained by members of the crew in an effort to prevent further disruption and protect other passengers and crew members.

However, authorities have not established that the passenger's earlier behaviour was directly responsible for his death.

The circumstances surrounding his medical condition, the events leading to his death and the precise cause of death remain subject to investigation.

Body deposited at Lagos morgue

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that investigations have commenced.

According to the police, statements have been obtained from members of the flight crew, including the aircraft's captain, as investigators attempt to establish what happened before the passenger died.

The deceased's remains have reportedly been deposited at a morgue in Ikeja, Lagos.

Police authorities described the incident as involving an inadmissible passenger, adding that complications reportedly developed during the return flight.

The police said the passenger had experienced breathing difficulties before the aircraft landed and that medical personnel were alerted. He was subsequently confirmed dead after the aircraft arrived in Lagos.

The passenger's identity has not been officially released.

An autopsy could provide additional information about the circumstances and possible cause of death. The NCAA's Achimugu said the deceased's family could request an autopsy as the investigation progresses.

Kenya Airways offers condolences

Kenya Airways has expressed sympathy to the passenger's relatives and friends following the incident.

The airline said it was providing the necessary support while cooperating with the deceased's family, Nigerian authorities and aviation regulators.

The carrier also apologised for any inconvenience caused to other passengers as a result of the medical emergency.

The incident highlights the challenges airlines and cabin crews face when passengers suffer serious medical problems during flights.

While commercial aircraft are equipped with emergency medical supplies and cabin crews receive first-aid training, the ability to provide comprehensive medical treatment during a flight is necessarily limited. In serious cases, crews may have to stabilise passengers until the aircraft can land and medical professionals can take over.

In this case, the Kenya Airways crew responded to the passenger's condition before the aircraft reached Lagos, while medical personnel were arranged to meet the aircraft upon arrival.

Investigation expected to provide answers

Authorities are expected to establish a clearer timeline of events as the investigation continues.

Key questions include what caused the passenger to become unresponsive, whether he had an underlying medical condition, what happened during the flight after he was restrained and whether any other factors contributed to his death.

At this stage, officials have not publicly confirmed a specific medical cause of death.

The police investigation, statements from crew members and any possible autopsy findings could provide further answers.

For Kenya Airways, the incident is another example of the unpredictable medical emergencies that can occur during international air travel.

For the passenger's family, however, the focus remains on understanding what happened and recovering the remains of their loved one.

As investigations continue, aviation authorities and the police are expected to provide further information when it becomes available.

For now, Kenya Airways has confirmed only that a passenger on its Nairobi-Lagos service became unresponsive shortly before landing and was pronounced dead after medical personnel examined him at Lagos airport. The identity of the passenger and the definitive cause of death remain undisclosed pending the outcome of the investigation.
