Israel Puts Military on High Alert Ahead of October 7 Anniversary

Israel has placed its military on heightened alert ahead of the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack, with Defence Minister Israel Katz ordering the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to prepare for possible attacks against Israeli troops in Gaza.

Katz issued the order on Tuesday, October 6, a day before the anniversary, saying Israeli intelligence indicated that Hamas could attempt to carry out attacks or other operations against Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip on October 7.

The move comes at a particularly sensitive moment, as Israel continues to commemorate the deadliest attack in its modern history while the Gaza conflict remains unresolved and tensions continue despite a ceasefire arrangement.

Military ordered to prepare for possible attacks

Katz instructed the IDF to increase its readiness and prepare for what Israeli authorities described as a range of possible scenarios.

According to the Defence Ministry, the heightened alert was based on intelligence suggesting that Hamas intended to target Israeli forces in Gaza on the anniversary of the 2023 assault.

The minister said the military should prepare for the worst and respond forcefully to intelligence or warnings of an imminent threat. He also warned that Hamas and Gaza's population would face severe consequences if Israeli soldiers were harmed.

The statement represents a significant security precaution because anniversaries of major attacks can carry symbolic importance for militant organisations and may be used to attempt attacks designed to demonstrate continued operational capability.

However, the intelligence cited by Israel does not necessarily mean that an attack will occur. Israeli authorities have not publicly released detailed evidence supporting the assessment.

October 7 remains a defining date for Israel

The October 7 anniversary marks three years since Hamas-led militants launched a large-scale assault on communities and military positions in southern Israel.

According to Israeli official figures cited by AFP, 1,221 people were killed in the attack, while 251 people were taken hostage and transported into Gaza. The attack triggered Israel's subsequent military campaign in the Palestinian territory.

The anniversary has therefore become both a day of national mourning in Israel and a major security concern for Israeli authorities.

President Isaac Herzog addressed a state memorial ceremony at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem on October 5, describing the attack as a national catastrophe and remembering civilians and soldiers who were killed. He also highlighted the experiences of communities and families affected by the assault.

The ceremonies come as many Israelis continue to grapple with the psychological and social consequences of the attack.

IDF has reviewed October 7 failures

The heightened alert is also connected to broader efforts by Israel's military leadership to learn from the failures that allowed the 2023 attack to achieve such a large-scale surprise.

IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir recently outlined changes to military readiness following internal investigations into the events surrounding October 7.

Among the changes are plans to maintain more forces on alert and in reserve, strengthen the defence of communities near Israel's borders and improve intelligence and early-warning systems.

The military has also said it will prepare for surprise attacks based on what adversaries are capable of doing rather than relying solely on assessments of what they intend to do.

The shift reflects one of the central lessons Israel has drawn from the October 7 attack: even when intelligence does not indicate that an attack is imminent, the military must maintain sufficient readiness to respond rapidly to a sudden assault.

Earlier military drills tested surprise attacks

Israel had already increased military preparedness ahead of the anniversary.

In September, the IDF conducted a surprise exercise known as “Breaking Dawn 2.0” to test the military's ability to respond to a sudden, complex and large-scale attack involving multiple fronts.

The exercise involved senior commanders, standby forces and reserves and tested scenarios including ground, air and maritime incursions, projectile attacks, mass-casualty incidents and hostage situations.

The IDF said the drill was part of efforts to strengthen operational readiness and incorporate lessons learned from the October 7 attack and subsequent fighting.

These preparations suggest that the military's heightened alert is not an isolated response but part of a broader effort to prevent a repeat of the conditions that existed before October 7, 2023.

Gaza remains tense despite ceasefire

The latest security measures come as violence continues in Gaza despite a ceasefire that began in October 2025.

Reuters reported on October 6 that Israeli strikes killed at least two Palestinians in Gaza, according to local health officials. The Israeli military said the strikes targeted militants.

Reuters also reported that Israeli forces have continued military activity in Gaza despite the ceasefire, while Israel says Hamas has been rearming and carrying out attacks. Hamas has rejected those accusations and accused Israel of undermining the Gaza peace arrangement.

The continuing incidents have created an unstable environment ahead of the anniversary.

The security situation is further complicated by disagreements over the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire, including questions surrounding Hamas's disarmament and the extent of an Israeli military withdrawal.

Netanyahu vows continued action

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also used the anniversary period to reaffirm Israel's position that Hamas cannot retain control over Gaza.

At a state ceremony marking three years since the October 7 attack, Netanyahu said there would be no Hamas rule in Gaza and vowed to continue targeting those responsible for the attack or the holding of hostages.

His comments underline the continuing gap between Israel's security objectives and efforts to establish a durable post-war arrangement for Gaza.

The anniversary also falls only weeks before Israel's parliamentary election scheduled for October 27, adding a political dimension to an already highly sensitive security environment.

Security measures expected to remain tight

With October 7 approaching, Israeli authorities are expected to maintain heightened vigilance around Gaza and other potentially sensitive areas.

The military's immediate priority is to prevent an attack on Israeli troops while ensuring that security forces can respond quickly if intelligence indicates an imminent threat.

For Israel, the anniversary is simultaneously a moment of remembrance and a test of the lessons learned from the 2023 attack.

The decision to put troops on heightened alert shows how deeply the events of October 7 continue to shape Israeli military planning three years later. It also demonstrates that, despite the ceasefire and efforts toward a longer-term settlement, Israeli authorities continue to regard Hamas and other armed groups as significant security threats.

As Israel marks the third anniversary of the attack, the country faces the difficult task of commemorating those killed while maintaining military readiness in a conflict whose political and security consequences remain unresolved.
