Danagogo Wenike-Briggs Speaks on Rivers Crisis, Calls on Citizens to “Rise” for Democracy and Inclusion
2027 Rivers governorship hopeful Engr. (Dr.) Danagogo Wenike-Briggs has reacted strongly to the ongoing Rivers political crisis, warning against excessive political control while urging citizens to defend democracy, inclusion, and institutional governance.
Emerging Rivers politician and 2027 governorship hopeful, Engr. (Dr.) Danagogo Wenike-Briggs has broken his silence on the prolonged political crisis rocking Rivers State, warning that the conflict now goes beyond individual political figures and threatens the future of democracy, inclusion, and public trust in governance.
In a strongly worded reaction titled “Rivers People Must Rise,” the former Young Progressives Party (YPP) governorship candidate described the current political situation in Rivers State as a defining moment for the future of democratic participation and political freedom within the oil-rich state.
According to Wenike-Briggs, many Rivers people - particularly supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara - feel emotionally wounded and politically disappointed by recent developments surrounding the ongoing power struggle in the state.
“What is happening in Rivers State today goes beyond one man, one governor, or one political party,” he stated. “It is gradually becoming a question about the future of democracy, political freedom, equity, and the collective dignity of Rivers people.”
His comments come amid continuing tensions linked to the political rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former Rivers governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike.
The Rivers political crisis has dominated national headlines for months, with disputes involving the State House of Assembly, political control, governance structures, and allegations of excessive external influence over state affairs.
A New Generation Voice in Rivers Politics
Engr. (Dr.) Danagogo Wenike-Briggs has steadily emerged as one of the notable young political voices in Rivers State. A civil engineer, project management Ph.D. holder, administrator, and politician, Wenike-Briggs first gained statewide prominence during the 2023 governorship election when he contested under the platform of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).
At just 38 years old during the election cycle, he became one of the youngest governorship candidates in Rivers State and attracted attention for his grassroots-driven campaign focused on youth empowerment, economic reforms, institutional rebuilding, and inclusive governance.
Political observers noted that his campaign particularly resonated with young voters, professionals, and entrepreneurs seeking alternatives to traditional political structures. Throughout the campaign, Wenike-Briggs promoted what he described as the “6E’s Agenda” - Education, Employment, Entrepreneurship, Empowerment, E-Security, and Equity in healthcare and social welfare.
Supporters viewed him as part of a rising generation of technocratic politicians advocating innovation-driven governance in Rivers State.
“Fubara Tried Within His Limitations”
In his latest political intervention, Wenike-Briggs acknowledged Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s calm approach amid mounting political pressure.
While stopping short of fully endorsing either political camp, he argued that Fubara deserves credit for attempting to maintain peace despite operating under difficult political circumstances. “Frankly speaking, I must give Governor Fubara credit. He’s a peaceful governor, and I believe he tried within the limitations around him,” Wenike-Briggs stated.
He added that leadership is not always determined by personal intentions alone but can be constrained by entrenched political structures and power dynamics. “Sometimes the political structure around a leader becomes stronger than the leader himself. That does not necessarily make him weak. It simply shows how powerful an entrenched political system can become.”
Observers say his remarks reflect growing public debate about the balance of political influence and institutional independence within Rivers State politics.
Concerns Over Political Dominance
A major theme in Wenike-Briggs’ statement was his concern about what he described as excessive concentration of political power around a few individuals and interests. Without directly attacking any individual, he referenced the continued political influence of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, whom many believe remains deeply influential in determining political outcomes in Rivers State. “Democracy suffers when decisions become dependent on personalities rather than principles,” he warned.
Wenike-Briggs acknowledged Wike’s political strength and strategic influence but cautioned against prolonged dominance overshadowing democratic competition and institutional governance. “The danger any society faces is when political dominance begins to overshadow institutional dependence, regional balance, and open democratic competition.”
The comments are likely to fuel ongoing conversations around political succession, power rotation, and governance independence in Rivers State.
Warning Over Economic and Social Impact
Beyond politics, Wenike-Briggs warned that the prolonged crisis is already affecting investor confidence, youth morale, governance focus, and economic stability in Rivers State. According to him, politics should serve as a tool for development rather than consuming the state’s entire energy and public attention.
He also raised concerns about inclusiveness and political representation across different regions of Rivers State, particularly among riverine communities. “No society survives long when sections of the population begin feeling politically invisible,” he stated.
Analysts say these comments reflect increasing conversations around equity, regional inclusion, and power balance within Rivers politics.
Call for Democratic Reforms
Despite the tensions, Wenike-Briggs urged Rivers people to remain peaceful and avoid hatred or violence. He emphasized that the solution lies in strengthening democratic institutions, accountability, fairness, and inclusive leadership rather than deepening political divisions.
“Politics should never become a permanent battle for control,” he said. “Leadership must eventually answer to history, and history is unforgiving.”
His concluding message - “Rivers people must rise” - has already generated reactions across social media platforms and political discussion forums within the state. Some supporters praised the statement as courageous and balanced, while critics accused him of indirectly positioning himself ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
Rising Attention Ahead of 2027
As Rivers State continues navigating one of its most politically turbulent periods in recent history, Wenike-Briggs’ intervention may further elevate his visibility ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Political observers increasingly view him as part of a younger generation of Rivers politicians attempting to redefine governance conversations around institutions, youth participation, and development-oriented leadership.
Whether his message translates into broader political momentum remains uncertain, but his growing profile suggests he may remain an influential voice in Rivers' politics in the years ahead.
