50-Year-Old Murder Suspect Dies After Collapsing During Bayelsa Court Proceedings

A 50-year-old murder suspect, Bethlehem Nwanlia, has died after suddenly collapsing at the Bayelsa State High Court in Yenagoa while awaiting judgment in a case involving allegations of conspiracy, kidnapping and the murder of three people.

Nwanlia reportedly collapsed shortly after proceedings at Court 11, presided over by Justice Amadise Michael Ekadi, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

He was standing trial alongside 32-year-old Gideon Atama and Clever Ovo over allegations connected to the 2022 killings of three people in Kalaba community, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The dramatic incident occurred after the court adjourned judgment in the matter to October 27, 2026, reportedly because of the absence of the presiding judge.

Suspect suddenly collapses in court

According to eyewitness accounts cited by the News Agency of Nigeria, Nwanlia suddenly clutched his chest and collapsed in the court's holding area shortly after the adjournment was announced.

Those around him, including officers of the Nigeria Correctional Service, police personnel and lawyers, reportedly attempted to revive him.

When those efforts were unsuccessful, medical personnel were called to examine him.

Nwanlia was subsequently taken to a hospital for further medical examination, where his death was confirmed. His remains were later deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.

The sudden death reportedly shocked people at the court premises, including correctional officers, security personnel, lawyers and other individuals who had gathered for the proceedings.

The Bayelsa State Judiciary confirmed the incident.

Its Public Relations Officer, Enoch Okunobo, told journalists that a murder suspect who had regularly appeared before the court had collapsed and died.

Okunobo confirmed that Nwanlia's corpse had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre mortuary.

Case involved alleged murder of three people

Nwanlia's death occurred as his trial was approaching its conclusion.

He and the two other defendants were being prosecuted over allegations arising from the 2022 killings of three people in Kalaba community, Yenagoa Local Government Area.

The victims were identified in reports as Odeinyefa Ogbolosingha, an in-law of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri; Kolibo Francis Amabelimo, the Paramount Ruler of Kalaba; and Samuel Oburo.

The suspects were reportedly arrested in 2022 by operatives of Operation Puff Adder, now known as the Violent Crime Response Unit, in connection with the investigation into the killings.

Nwanlia and his co-defendants faced allegations including conspiracy, kidnapping and multiple murder.

However, it is important to note that the allegations against Nwanlia had not been finally determined by the court before his death.

His death therefore brings his individual criminal proceedings to an end without a final judgment being delivered against him.

Judgment adjourned to October 27

The case was reportedly scheduled for judgment on Tuesday.

However, the absence of Justice Amadise Ekadi meant that the court could not proceed with the delivery of the judgment.

The matter was consequently adjourned until October 27, 2026.

It was shortly after the adjournment was announced that Nwanlia reportedly complained of chest pain before collapsing.

A court registry official who witnessed the incident described the sequence of events, saying the suspect clutched his chest and became unconscious immediately after the adjournment was announced.

The incident transformed what had been an ordinary court proceeding into an emergency, with security officials and lawyers rushing to assist the suspect.

Health problems reported in custody

Reports indicate that Nwanlia had experienced health complications during his time in custody.

He was said to have developed hypertension and suffered a stroke while being held at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Yenagoa.

However, authorities had not established the immediate medical cause of his death as of the time of reporting.

The fact that Nwanlia had reportedly experienced health challenges while in custody has raised questions about his medical condition, but there is currently no official finding establishing precisely what caused his death.

An appropriate medical examination or autopsy may be required to determine the exact cause.

Police yet to provide full details

The Bayelsa State Police Command was also contacted following the incident.

The command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, reportedly said he was unaware of the death when contacted.

He promised to make inquiries and provide further information, but no additional details had been made available at the time of the reports.

The absence of an immediate police account means several details surrounding the incident remain unclear, particularly concerning Nwanlia's medical condition immediately before the collapse and whether any formal medical examination has been conducted.

Death leaves case with two defendants

Nwanlia's death also changes the status of the criminal proceedings involving the three accused persons.

With one of the defendants now deceased, Gideon Atama and Clever Ovo remain the two other defendants associated with the case.

The court's next steps regarding the surviving defendants will depend on the proceedings and applicable legal procedures.

For Nwanlia's case, however, no judgment will now be delivered because the accused has died before the court could determine the allegations against him.

The development also highlights the importance of medical care for inmates and defendants appearing in court, particularly those with known or reported health conditions.

A dramatic end to a high-profile trial

The death of Bethlehem Nwanlia has brought an unexpected and dramatic end to his participation in a case that has remained before the Bayelsa State High Court for several years.

He had appeared in court with his co-defendants to await a judgment that was expected to determine the outcome of the allegations against them.

Instead, the proceedings were adjourned, and moments later, Nwanlia collapsed.

While authorities have confirmed his death, the immediate cause remains officially unconfirmed.

His remains are now at the Federal Medical Centre mortuary in Yenagoa, while the legal proceedings involving the surviving defendants are expected to continue.

For now, attention remains focused on establishing what caused the 50-year-old suspect to collapse and die inside the court premises, as questions surrounding his reported health complications and final moments remain unanswered.
